Stoic Training for Mental Resilience

class image

One 8-hour day in a classroom

1 to 2 hour coaching sessions each week, over 8 or 12 weeks

No sane person would suggest avoiding the gym until AFTER you suffer a physical injury. It’s well established that maintaining a fit, healthy body is one of the most effective ways to avoid injuries. Yet, the vast majority of mental health services available to public servants focus on addressing problems after they have arisen. If only there were a gym for the mind, so to speak.

For more than 2,000 years, Stoicism has offered practitioners a course of training for the mind as powerful and effective as programs like CrossFit are for the body. It provides tools and skills necessary to build habits that allow us to take control of our thinking and, in turn, our emotions. Not to be confused with lower case “stoicism” – the unhealthy stiff-upper-lip suppression of emotions – the Greco-Roman philosophy Stoicism accepts that emotions are a natural part of life not to be denied. Rather, Stoicism trains its students, known as Prokoptons, to manage unhealthy emotions in accordance with nature.

Topics Include:

Familiarization with key principles of Stoicism

Guided exercises

Periodic, In-person coaching

This will not be a one-and-done course, but rather an 8 (or 12) week academy. Students will receive an initial orientation in the basic principles of Stoicism (8-hours in classroom), followed by weekly coaching sessions to provide reinforcement and assist in building Stoic exercises into habit.
